The photograph shows a densely packed, multiracial crowd in the foreground; in the background, thousands of additional demonstrators extend to the shore of the Reflecting Pool. The image was taken during the rally on the National Mall on August 28, 1963. One participant wears a light-colored hat with the number 140, while another holds a camera—evidence of the diverse and documentary participation in this event. The visible composition of the crowd, comprising Black and white people, reflects the central aim of the march: to form a broad coalition for civil rights and equal employment opportunities. The 1963 March on Washington is considered one of the most important mass protests of the U.S. civil rights movement and culminated in the historic speeches at the Lincoln Memorial.
