The photograph shows several participants of the March on Washington on August 28, 1963, sitting on the grass and following the rally. One man wears a cap inscribed “Full Employment”; in the foreground, another cap with the inscription “UAW” is visible — the abbreviation for the United Auto Workers, one of the unions that supported the march. The demands for full employment and fair jobs were as central as those for civil rights; the complete name of the demonstration was “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.” The still image illustrates the alliance between the civil rights movement and unions that carried the mass demonstration in Washington, D.C.
