The Reichstag building in the western part of Berlin, popularly perceived as a symbol of German division, lay immediately adjacent to the sector border in 1963. The aerial photograph was taken in the context of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany on June 26, 1963. Two years after the construction of the Wall, West Berlin stood at the center of the Cold War; Kennedy’s visit was intended to reaffirm the solidarity of the Western Allies with the besieged city.
