The Victory Column in the Tiergarten was among the striking landmarks of West Berlin that were documented on film during Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall that had existed since 1961. Aerial shots such as this served to position the divided city on film as a symbol of Western determination to assert itself.
