The aerial photograph shows Breitscheidplatz in the heart of West Berlin with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church: the tower destroyed in World War II as a memorial and the new building (Octagon) completed in 1961 next to it. The image was taken in the context of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany on June 26, 1963. West Berlin was at this time a symbol of Western resistance in the Cold War, separated from East Berlin since the construction of the Wall in 1961.
