The photograph shows the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church at Breitscheidplatz from an aerial perspective. The ensemble consisting of the preserved ruin tower and the new buildings completed in 1961 (bell tower and memorial hall) was at that time a striking symbol of West Berlin. The aerial photograph was taken in the context of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany, whose Berlin leg took place on June 26, 1963. West Berlin stood at that time as a symbol of the free world during the Cold War, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
