The Brandenburg Gate is photographed from a western perspective; in the foreground, a truck passes the sector border, while a sign clearly reads “Beginning of the Democratic Sector of Greater Berlin.” The gate itself bears distinct war damage, and a flag waves on the attic structure, which at that time lay in the Soviet-controlled sector. The sector sign marks the transition from West Berlin into the East Sector—a daily experienced reality of the divided city in 1955. The Brandenburg Gate was at this point not a freely passable structure but a closely watched symbol of division, claimed equally by East and West. The photograph stands as an exemplary document of the Cold War in everyday life: the demarcation line running through the former capital was made visible through such signposts and deliberately documented for passersby and film crews alike.
