On June 6, 1944, Allied troops landed at multiple sections of the Normandy coast as part of Operation Overlord. This still from Jack Lieb’s private 16-mm Kodachrome material shows British soldiers during landing—a scene documenting the transition from landing craft to beach. Lieb’s color footage represents rare testimony to an event otherwise preserved almost exclusively in black and white. In the film, these images appear in the section covering the crossing and landing, immediately following preparatory footage shot in England.
