On June 6, 1944 (D-Day), Allied troops landed along several sections of the Normandy coast as part of Operation Overlord. This excerpt from Jack Lieb’s color footage shows British soldiers shortly before the landing—a phase that in other sources is preserved almost exclusively in black and white. The photographs were taken in the area of the Allied landing beaches and are among the earliest sequences in Lieb’s film, which leads directly after the crossing into the interior of Normandy and then continues with the advance inland.
