This still image is from the embarkation sequence in Jack Lieb’s color film and shows ships of the Allied invasion fleet in the English Channel shortly before or during the landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Operation Overlord comprised one of the largest naval operations in history: thousands of warships and landing craft brought troops, materiel, and equipment to the Norman coast. Lieb was aboard a ship that was to bring him with an element of the 82nd Airborne Division to Utah Beach, and he documented the crossing in color as one of the few war correspondents to do so.
