This still belongs to the embarkation or crossing phase in Lieb’s film, which documents the preparations on the south English coast and the Channel crossing in June 1944. Soldier mascots and animals brought along were not uncommon in Allied units and were regarded as an unofficial part of troop daily life. Lieb’s private 16-mm Kodachrome camera captured such incidental moments in color, which largely went unnoticed in the contemporary newsreels.
