In June 1944, a massive invasion force crossed the English Channel toward Normandy. Jack Lieb was aboard a landing ship and captured the crossing in color with his 16mm Kodachrome camera. The footage belongs to the phase of embarkation and channel crossing that immediately preceded the assault on Utah Beach. Lieb’s color footage of these operations is particularly rare from a documentary standpoint, as comparable material from this phase of Operation Overlord survives almost exclusively in black and white.
