This image was created in connection with D-Day 1944 and shows US soldiers aboard a ship. Ship mascots – usually dogs or cats – were widespread in the US Navy and Army and were regarded as unofficial companions to crews on transport ships. Jack Lieb filmed such everyday moments with his private 16-mm Kodachrome camera, which captures the crossing and invasion routine in rare color documentation. The photograph appears in the early part of Lieb’s film, which documents the phase of embarkation and the crossing of the English Channel.
