This photograph was taken as part of Operation Overlord and shows a portion of the enormous Allied invasion fleet on the English Channel. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, several thousand ships of various types crossed the Channel toward Normandy. Jack Lieb arrived with a sea-based element of the 82nd Airborne Division at Utah Beach and documented the crossing in color as one of only a few cameramen to do so. This phase marks the transition in Lieb’s film from embarkation preparations in England to the actual landing.
