The Atlantic Wall was a system of fortifications constructed by Germany from 1942 onward along the western European coast, consisting of bunkers, gun positions, and obstacles. Following the Allied landing in Normandy on 6 June 1944, these installations were largely destroyed or abandoned without fighting during the course of combat around Utah and Omaha Beach and the surrounding sectors. Jack Lieb documented the remains of German coastal fortifications as part of his color film material, which accompanied the immediate advance of Allied troops into the Normandy hinterland.
