The Atlantic Wall was a defensive system constructed by the German Wehrmacht beginning in 1942 along the western European coast, designed to prevent the Allied invasion. Following the successful Allied landing in Normandy on June 6, 1944, and the advance into the interior, these installations fell into Allied hands. Jack Lieb documented the abandoned fortifications as part of his color film material covering the period between the landing and the advance into the interior. Such footage illustrates the extent of German coastal defense and its overcoming by Allied forces.
