The Atlantic Wall was the German coastal defense system that extended from Norway to the Spanish border and had been particularly developed in Normandy. Following the landings of June 6, 1944, Allied troops encountered numerous such fortifications, whose remains were left behind along the coast. Jack Lieb documented these fortification elements as part of his color footage from the Normandy phase of the campaign. The photographs were taken in connection with Lieb’s landing at Utah Beach with the 82nd Airborne Division and the subsequent advance into the interior.
