Aachen fell in October 1944 as the first major German city to come into Allied hands, following several days of street fighting. During this phase of the advance, Jack Lieb documented not only military operations but also encounters between U.S. soldiers and the remaining civilian population. Such scenes belong to the late advance phase of his film and show daily life immediately after the capture of occupied towns.
