This photograph was taken in London in May 1944, as Jack Lieb documented the preparations of the Allied forces for D-Day. In the midst of the tense pre-invasion phase, he also captured civilian everyday scenes that show life in the British capital shortly before the invasion. Such snapshots form a quiet counterpoint to military events in Lieb’s film and are of particular documentary value due to their rarity in color.
