This still image belongs to the opening sequence of Jack Lieb’s color film and shows U.S. military personnel during deployment preparations in England before June 6, 1944. In the weeks before D-Day, Allied units and war correspondents concentrated along the south English coast, where embarkation and operational briefings took place. Lieb captured this preparatory atmosphere with his private 16-mm Kodachrome camera in color—a medium that significantly complemented the documentary impact of contemporary black-and-white photographs of the same events.
