In the lead-up to D-Day, June 6, 1944, hundreds of American landing craft concentrated in the ports of southern England for the attack on the Normandy coast. The units visible here belonged to the massive invasion fleet of Operation Overlord, which transported troops for Utah Beach, among other objectives. Jack Lieb documented this embarkation phase as one of the few cameramen shooting in color, while comparable footage from these weeks survives almost exclusively in black and white.
