In the summer of 1944, Allied troops advanced rapidly inland following the landing in Normandy and secured cities such as Cherbourg and surrounding localities. Jack Lieb documented this phase of the campaign with his private 16mm Kodachrome camera in color – a rare document, as nearly all other recordings of these events exist only in black and white. The scene belongs to the early section of Lieb’s film, which shows the advance of US forces from the Normandy beaches through the defeated interior.
