During the Allied advance through Germany, US troops regularly encountered Nazi regime propaganda material in occupied buildings, including portraits of Hitler that had been mandatory displays in government offices, barracks, and public institutions. The sign “Freizeitgestaltung” indicates a military or state facility. Such scenes, in which soldiers presented captured Nazi memorabilia, were documented by war correspondents such as Jack Lieb and served as evidence of the collapse of German rule. The image appears in Lieb’s film during the phase of the advance through Germany in 1944/45.
