After weeks of fighting, the port city of Cherbourg capitulated to Allied forces on June 26, 1944. The capture of Cherbourg was strategically decisive, as the Allies urgently needed a major deep-water harbor for supply operations. Jack Lieb captured in color with his 16-mm Kodachrome camera, as one of the few observers to do so, how German soldiers — some of them wounded — fell into Allied captivity as prisoners of war. The footage documents the end of organized German resistance in the Normandy port fortress.
