After weeks of fighting, German defenders of Cherbourg capitulated in late June 1944; the city was of strategic importance to the Allies as a deep supply port. Jack Lieb captured Wehrmacht prisoners of war in Cherbourg as one of the few cameramen working in color. The footage was made during the Allied advance from Utah Beach to Cherbourg, the first major port capture following D-Day.
