After weeks of fighting, the German defenders of Cherbourg capitulated to US forces at the end of June 1944. The capture of the harbor was a strategically important objective for the Allies, as Cherbourg was to serve as a supply port for the further advance into France. Jack Lieb documented the German prisoners of war as part of his color film material — footage that otherwise recorded this moment almost exclusively in black and white.
