After weeks of fighting, the German defenders of Cherbourg capitulated to U.S. forces at the end of June 1944. The capture of the harbor was a strategic main objective for the Allies following the landing in Normandy, as a functioning deep-water port was essential for supplying the advance. Jack Lieb recorded the evacuation of prisoners with his 16-mm Kodachrome camera in color – a rare color document of this phase of the liberation of Western Europe.
