After weeks of fighting, the German defenders of Cherbourg capitulated to US forces on June 29, 1944. The capture of the port was strategically decisive for the Allies, as a functioning deep-water harbor was to secure the supply lines of the Normandy beachhead. Jack Lieb, as one of the few cameramen, recorded the events in color; the column of captured soldiers marching through the streets of Cherbourg documents the immediate result of the Allied offensive in Normandy.
