Cherbourg fell on June 26, 1944, after weeks of fighting into American hands—a strategically decisive success, as the harbor secured the Allies a functional supply route. The capture of the city belongs to the phase of advance following the landing in Normandy and is part of Jack Lieb’s color footage from the summer of 1944. The captured Wehrmacht soldiers document the end of German resistance on the Cotentin Peninsula. Otherwise almost exclusively preserved in black and white, Lieb’s Kodachrome material shows this historical scene in color.
