After weeks of fighting, the German defenders of Cherbourg capitulated at the end of June 1944 to units of the U.S. Army. The capture of the port was strategically decisive, as the Allies urgently needed an efficient supply port for their further advance. Jack Lieb recorded in color the removal of German prisoners of war through the streets of Cherbourg — a scene that in Lieb’s film marks the conclusion of the Cherbourg phase and documents Allied control over the city.
