The Ellinger Gate is one of the preserved town gates of the medieval fortifications of Weißenburg in Bavaria. The massive sandstone structure displays two flanking round towers with conical roofs as well as a projecting square main tower; heraldic shields and decorative reliefs are visible on the gate front. An automobile is just passing through the gate passage, illustrating the contrast between medieval masonry and contemporary 1930s traffic. In the travel film, Weißenburg serves as a station between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nuremberg and represents the well-preserved historical urban architecture of Franconia. The still image belongs to the film’s sequence of medieval town views, which were intended to present the historical heritage of German small towns to an international audience.
