Ernest Hemingway accompanied the Allied forces in 1944 as an accredited war correspondent through Normandy. The photograph was taken at Mont-Saint-Michel, which was reached in the summer of 1944 during the course of the Allied advance following the landing in Normandy. During this phase, Hemingway traveled with, among others, the 4th U.S. Infantry Division and belonged to the circle of prominent American correspondents whom Lieb recorded in color with his private 16-mm Kodachrome camera. The image is one of the rare color portraits of Hemingway from World War II.
