The photograph shows Helen Kirkpatrick at Mont-Saint-Michel in the summer of 1944. Kirkpatrick was one of the few accredited US war correspondents in Europe and reported for the Chicago Daily News on the invasion and the liberation of France. Mont-Saint-Michel, which German troops had abandoned without major fighting, served as a stopping point for Allied correspondents and soldiers shortly after the Normandy breakthrough. The image belongs to the section on the Normandy hinterland in Jack Lieb’s private color film.
