The photograph shows, from an elevated perspective, a central square in the downtown area of Frankfurt am Main, captured in 1937 as part of a cultural travel film. In the middle ground, a two-axle streetcar operates on the busy square; numerous pedestrians animate the street space. Striking is a small octagonal pavilion building of dark sandstone with a multiply-angled tent roof, which served as a kiosk or waiting shelter. The background is characterized by multi-story Gründerzeit buildings with richly articulated façades. On the left edge of the frame is visible an ornamentally designed detail—presumably of a fountain or memorial sculpture—from which the camera pans. The cityscape in the travel film exemplifies Frankfurt as a lively, modern metropolis of the 1930s.
