The photograph shows the Römerberg in Frankfurt am Main with the distinctive stepped-gable façade of the Römer, the medieval town hall complex of the city. The three staggered gables with their finials and the Gothic arcade arches on the ground floor define the view; to the right, another historical building with round-arch arcades is visible. Only a few pedestrians are seen on the square, suggesting a quiet time of day. In the 1937 travel film, the Römerberg stands as representative of Frankfurt’s medieval cityscape and its historical significance as a free imperial city. The footage follows the sequences of the spa towns Wiesbaden and Bad Homburg in the film and leads the viewer into the urban center on the Main.
