Cherbourg was captured by US troops in late June 1944 after heavy fighting — the first major port city to be liberated following the landing in Normandy. The war damage visible in the background reflects the intense fighting over the city, which the Wehrmacht had defended to the end. Jack Lieb documented in color how the civilian population celebrated the liberation — a moment that in other sources has been handed down almost exclusively in black and white.
