This photograph was taken during Jack Lieb’s filming work in London in advance of D-Day (May 1944). Buckingham Palace served during the Second World War as a symbol of British steadfastness; the building itself had been damaged multiple times by German air raids. Lieb’s Kodachrome sequences from London are part of the introductory phase of his film, which documents everyday life and the atmosphere of war in England before the invasion.
