The photograph was taken during Jack Lieb’s filming in London in spring 1944, which forms the opening section of his film ‘D-Day to Germany’. Buckingham Palace was targeted multiple times by German air raids during World War II and stood under military protection; London was at that time in a state of emergency due to invasion preparations. Lieb’s color footage from this phase documents the everyday appearance of the British capital shortly before the largest amphibious operation in history.
