The photograph belongs to the opening sequence of Jack Lieb’s film, which shows London and England in spring 1944 — in the weeks before the landing in Normandy. Tower Bridge was one of the best-known landmarks of wartime London; the harbor on the Thames served as an important transshipment point for supplies and troop movements. Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome footage is one of the rare color documents of London from this phase of the Second World War.
