On May 6, 1937, the passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and crashed to the ground within seconds. The still image shows the airship in the stage of burning descent: the structural framework is still visible, while fire and smoke engulf the wreckage. Ground personnel are visible on the airfield — the immediate phase of the disaster, in which rescue forces responded to the accident. 36 of the 97 people on board and on the ground lost their lives in the disaster.
