On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within seconds. The image shows the airship in the immediate phase of its descent as the burning hull sank to the ground. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The disaster, recorded by several newsreel cameras, marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
