On May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg caught fire during the mooring maneuver at Lakehurst and burned completely within seconds, then crashed to the ground. The still image shows the collapsed aluminum framework of the LZ 129 immediately after impact, with smoke still rising. The wreckage documents the abrupt end of the largest rigid airship ever built and is regarded as a symbol for the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
