On May 6, 1937, the passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg burned out within seconds during its landing maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The image shows the immediate aftermath of the fire: the skeleton of the airship had sunk to the ground, while rescue forces and emergency personnel secured the scene of the disaster. 36 people lost their lives in the catastrophe; it marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
