Following the complete destruction by fire of the Hindenburg in Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937, this photograph shows the situation at the disaster site shortly after the airship came down. The exposed metal framework of the LZ 129 and still-burning embers are visible; rescue personnel and helpers have reached the scene of the disaster. This phase documents the beginning of the rescue and recovery operation, during which survivors were recovered and debris was secured. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives.
