On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring maneuver at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The hydrogen-filled airship burned completely within seconds and crashed onto the grounds of the Naval Air Station. The photograph shows the disaster phase of the crash before the wreckage came completely to the ground. 36 of the 97 people on board were killed.
