On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during the mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. Within seconds, fire engulfed the entire hydrogen-filled hull; the airship sank burning onto the grounds of the naval base. The photograph documents the immediate phase of the crash, in which the wreckage still stands upright in the flames before it sinks completely to the ground. 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives.
