The still image documents the beginning of the fire disaster: During the docking maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, the hydrogen-filled Zeppelin LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire on May 6, 1937. The fire spread across the entire airship’s hull within seconds; the airship descended to the ground in flames. 36 of the 97 people on board perished. The disaster, recorded by several newsreel cameras, is regarded as the end of civil rigid airship transportation.
