The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) still intact in low flight during its approach maneuver to Lakehurst, New Jersey. The airship had previously flown over New York City and was now approaching the mooring mast of the naval base. Minutes after the mooring procedure, the hydrogen-filled vessel caught fire and burned completely in approximately half a minute. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives.
