On May 6, 1937, the hydrogen-filled passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg ignited during its mooring maneuver at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within seconds. This phase – the outbreak of the fire – was captured by several newsreel cameras and ranks among the most well-documented disaster moments of the twentieth century. 36 of the 97 people on board and on the ground lost their lives. The accident marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
