The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) still intact in low-level flight during its approach maneuver to Lakehurst, New Jersey. This represents the final phase of the transatlantic voyage before the airship caught fire while being moored at the mooring mast. On May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg met with disaster during this landing maneuver; of 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The newsreel footage of this phase documents the airship in its normal condition immediately before the catastrophe.
